A few days, but big impact
The Exploring Medicine team has been super busy the last few days seeing close to 500 patients! On Saturday, they saw 150 patients. On Sunday, they saw another 120 patients. This morning they held their last clinic session and saw the remainder of the patients. It's been such a few short days, but the team has been able to accomplish so much and really make an impact in the lives of their patients.
It's been great to hear the students interacting with the patients in Spanish. Their language skills have improved a lot in just a few short days!
Last night, the village welcomed a new baby! A Duke nursing and med student were able to visit the mom and baby this morning, along with a trained nurse who is assigned to the village. The mom and baby are both healthy and doing well. Dr. Clements says it was a great opportunity for the students to see firsthand and they learned a lot.
Two other great things to report: the weather is spectacular and the food is delicioso -- as they say in Spanish!
This afternoon, the Honduran partners are hosting a ceremony to thank the team for their hard work during their visit. The partners have also expressed gratitude for the clinic in this community. Construction of the clinic began five years ago and has been fully operational for three years. Beginning this year, a Honduran nurse will be based at the clinic year-round to see patients in the village and surrounding areas. The Exploring Medicine team will leave medicine for the nurse to dispense as needed.
Tomorrow, the team will be headed to Copan by bus. They will spend the first part of the day in clinic there and then finish off the day with some sight-seeing of the Mayan ruins.
